Every March 19, the Church honors St. Joseph, the faithful guardian of Jesus and Mary. Among his many titles—Patron of the Universal Church, Model of Fathers, Guardian of Virgins—one of the most striking is “Terror of Demons.”
But why is St. Joseph called this? What makes him such a powerful force against evil?
What Does “Terror of Demons” Mean?
This title reflects St. Joseph’s immense spiritual strength. Unlike St. Michael the Archangel, who battles demons with a sword, St. Joseph’s power comes from his obedience, humility, purity, and unwavering faith in God.
Demons fear those who are completely united with God—and St. Joseph embodies this perfectly. While evil thrives on pride, impurity, and rebellion, St. Joseph stands for humility, chastity, and total surrender to God’s will.
Why Do Demons Fear St. Joseph?
1. His Unshakable Faith and Obedience
When the angel appeared to St. Joseph in a dream, instructing him to take Mary as his wife, he obeyed immediately (Matthew 1:20-21). When told to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, he acted without hesitation (Matthew 2:13-15).
Satan and his demons rebelled against God. St. Joseph, on the other hand, followed God’s will completely. His obedience is a direct weapon against evil.
2. His Purity and Chastity
St. Joseph is often depicted holding a lily, a symbol of his purity. Chastity and purity are powerful weapons against Satan, who tempts people into sin through impurity.
A pure heart is strong, impenetrable to demonic influence. This is why St. Joseph, as the chaste guardian of Mary and Jesus, holds such power against evil forces.
3. His Role as Protector of Jesus and Mary
No man in history was entrusted with a greater spiritual mission than St. Joseph—to protect the Son of God and His Blessed Mother.
Because of this sacred duty, he was given extraordinary grace and strength. Even today, he continues to protect the Church and all who seek his intercession.
